Silver Sneakers 

SilverSneakers® is a fun, energizing program that helps older adults take greater control of their health by encouraging physical activity and offering social events.

Unlock the door to greater independence and a healthier life with SilverSneakers®. Health plans around the country offer this program to people who are eligible for Medicare or to group retirees. SilverSneakers® provides a FREE fitness center membership to the YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing offers Silver Sneakers®, the nation’s leading exercise program for active older adults who are Medicare eligible.  This innovative program provides opportunities for seniors to improve their fitness, health, and well-being.  Silver Sneakers classes are designed specifically for the unique health and physical needs of older adults. Taught by a certified instructor, classes focus on improving strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.

Silver Sneakers Classes 

SILVER SNEAKERS: This class can help you maintain an independent lifestyle and is appropriate for individ- uals who are fit and active as well as those who are sedentary, intimidated or unfamiliar with exercise. This positive social environment will improve strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness and your quality of life.

TAI CHI BY SILVER SNEAKERS: Tai Chi practice is considered a “Wellness” program in that the focus of the exercises are full body “range of motion” designed to allow all physiological systems to freely work as de- signed to obtain a sense of well being and a strong immune system. Tai Chi is considered a physical thera- py and well known for its proven health benefits. Typical Participants: People over 65 that may have phys- ical movement or stress problems due to chronic disease, injury, surgery, or simply a long sedentary life style

SILVER SNEAKERS BOOM MIND: takes the best from yoga and Pilates and combines them into one fusion class. Designed to relax the body and mind with peaceful music and invigorating movements. The focus of the class is on core muscles, body strength and balance. Floor work is included.

SILVER SNEAKERS BOOM MUSCLE: helps to build muscular strength & endurance and car- diovascular endurance by combining muscle conditioning blocks and bursts of cardio ac- tion intervals. Class includes floor work.

SILVERSNEAKERS YOGA: This class incorporates range of motion exercises, alignment, stretching, strengthening, awareness, breathing and relaxation in order to refresh, energize, improve posture, deepen breathing and improve sense of well-being. This class can be done seated in a chair or standing.

 

Other Active Older Adult Classes 

AOA (Active Older Adult): The Active Older Adult program is comprised of both cardiovascular and strength training. Exercise at your own pace under the supervision of our qualified fitness professionals. This program is supervised at all times by qualified staff.

BOOMER STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY: An exercise routine designed to strengthen the core and other muscle groups and increase flexibility for our Senior members. A low impact class that is easily modified to meet your fitness level and needs. Work hard and sweat or go easier and head straight to work. The class provides bands, stability balls, and mats. Get loosened up and warmed up to start your day.

ENHANCED FITNESS: Improve your strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health with this program designed for seniors. This evidence-based program is endorsed by the Michigan De- partment of Community Health Arthritis Program and the CDC.

FIT AFTER 50: In this class, you will be instructed by an instructor with special training in adult fitness and independence. You can expect a low-impact aerobics class to enhance heart health and resistance training designed to maintain and increase strength. You will also focus on dynamic and static balance exercises.
